This tour to Epidaurus and Mycenae will take you right into one of the most integral historic sites in Greece. A fascinating trip to the Argolis area on the outskirts of the city, in a comfortable luxury air-conditioned bus, will get you up close and personal with some of the major areas of Greek antiquity.
Our first stop for the day is the picturesque Corinth Canal, a route of great strategic importance in its time, connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean Sea. Bounded by steep yet absolutely stunning walls of limestone, this narrow channel of water was built as a transportation route and ended up being a popular tourist spot. Having witnessed the Canal, we will move on mythical city of Mycenae, dating back to the Neolithic Age and the backdrop for most of Greece’s famed Classical Literature, including the works of Homer. Here you can catch sight of the towering Lion Gate, the entrance to the citadel which dates back to the Bronze Age, as well as the Treasury of Atreus or Tomb of Agamemnon, Helen’s brother-in-law.
Next up is the Venetian sea facing town of Nafplio, the first capital of modern day Greece, where you can also find the spectacular 18th century bastioned citadel of Palmidi - a true marvel of Baroque architecture. Casually ramble along the streets of this pretty port town, soaking in the scenic surroundings as well as its historic roots. You can even treat yourself to a delectable Greek lunch here if you want.
Our final haunt for the day is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Epidaurus, synonymous with its magical amphitheatre. One of the best preserved theatres from Ancient Greece, it’s an engineering genius with marvellous acoustics - the reason it is still used to this day. Epidaurus is also considered to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son, Asclepius, believed to be the god of medicine in ancient Greek mythology. Epidaurus is hugely popular with history enthusiasts, making it almost a portal back to the dazzling days of the Golden Age. If you are visiting Greece, this is a trip you just cannot miss!
